Bermuda Rum SwizzleCocktail recipe
Rating
Despite tiki cocktails being one of the best ways to cool down in the heat, they’ve gotten a bad reputation in more recent decades. The 70s and 80s saw these classic recipes get cheapened with processed juices and sugary additions, making them synonymous with tacky hotel bars and cruise ships.
However, there’s been a revival in recent years, with cocktails popping up around the globe featuring quality spirits, fresh squeezed juices, and homemade grenadines. And thanks to our friends over at Gosling’s Rum, we’ve been gifted the perfect recipe for celebrating summer. Inspired by the tropical flavors of Bermuda, the Rum Swizzle features two different types of rum, orange and pineapple juices, and Angostura bitters for depth. Whip up a batch and be instantly transported to the islands.

FAQ's
What is the history of the Bermuda Rum Swizzle?
The Bermuda Rum Swizzle is considered one of Bermuda's oldest and most beloved cocktails, dating back to the late 18th century. Often dubbed as Bermuda's national drink, it was traditionally mixed in a pitcher or a jug and served in parties and gatherings. The Swizzle Inn, one of the oldest pubs in Bermuda, claims to be the birthplace of this iconic drink, making it famous among locals and tourists alike. The drink's unique combination of island rum, citrus, and sweet Falernum embodies the tropical character of Bermuda.
How do you properly mix a Bermuda Rum Swizzle?
A Bermuda Rum Swizzle is traditionally mixed using a swizzle stick, a special tool originating from the Caribbean. To properly mix the cocktail, fill a pitcher with the ingredients: pineapple juice, orange juice, black and gold rums, Falernum, the juice of two lemons, and a dash of Angostura Bitters. Then, insert the swizzle stick and rapidly spin it between your hands to blend the ingredients thoroughly until the mixture is well chilled. This method not only mixes but also aerates the drink, providing a unique texture and enhancing the flavors.
What is the best way to serve a Bermuda Rum Swizzle?
The Bermuda Rum Swizzle is best served cold, poured over ice in a large pitcher or individual glasses. For an authentic presentation, garnish each glass with a slice of orange or a twist of lemon to complement the citrus flavors in the drink. The cocktail's vibrant, refreshing taste makes it perfect for sharing, making a pitcher ideal for social gatherings, especially during warm weather occasions.
Can I substitute any of the ingredients in a Bermuda Rum Swizzle without altering its classic taste?
While the Bermuda Rum Swizzle has a specific recipe, minor substitutions can be made. If Falernum is not available, a simple syrup with a touch of almond extract and a few cloves can be used as a substitute, though it will slightly alter the taste. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rums and use a combination of non-alcoholic spirits designed to mimic dark and gold rums. Note, however, that each substitution will change the traditional flavor profile of the cocktail.
How does the alcohol content in a Bermuda Rum Swizzle compare to other classic cocktails?
With an alcohol content of 15.95%, the Bermuda Rum Swizzle has a relatively moderate alcohol content when compared to other classic cocktails. For example, a Margarita typically has an alcohol content around 13-15%, while a Manhattan boasts a higher content, often around 30%, depending on the recipe. Therefore, the Bermuda Rum Swizzle offers a balance, making it stronger than some cocktails like the Margarita, but less potent than others like the Manhattan, suitable for those who prefer a pleasantly strong drink without it being overly intoxicating.
