Method
How to make a Absinthe Drip
-
- Begin by pouring the desired amount of absinthe into your glass of choice, setting the stage for your classic cocktail
-
- Next, place a cube of sugar on a slotted absinthe spoon, ensuring it rests securely across the top of the glass; this will add a subtle sweetness to the drink
-
- Then, gradually drip iced water over the sugar cube using an absinthe fountain, or improvise with a bottle of chilled mineral water by piercing a small hole in the cap, allowing the sugar to dissolve and mix into the absinthe
-
- Aim for a 1:1 ratio of water to absinthe, but feel free to adjust the amount of water if you're working with full-strength absinthe to achieve a more palatable dilution
-
- Continue this process until the absinthe becomes opaquely milky white, a transformation known as "louching", marking the perfect time to add ice
-
- Give the concoction a gentle stir to blend the ingredients and chill the drink, then prepare to serve your beautifully crafted absinthe cocktail

FAQ's
What is the history behind the Absinthe Drip?
The Absinthe Drip is a traditional way of serving absinthe, which became popular in France in the late 19th century. It involves diluting absinthe with cold water dripped over a sugar cube, which balances its bitterness and cloudy appearance, known as the louche effect. This method of serving emerged during the Belle Epoque era, a time synonymous with cultural flourishing and the bohemian lifestyle, where absinthe became known as the 'Green Fairy' due to its popularity among artists and writers.
Why do you use a sugar cube in an Absinthe Drip?
A sugar cube is used in an Absinthe Drip to counteract the natural bitterness of absinthe. The cold water dripped over the sugar cube dissolves the sugar, allowing it to mix with the absinthe, resulting in a smoother, slightly sweetened drink. This method enhances the overall flavor profile, making the potent spirit more palatable.
Is Absinthe legal, and can it cause hallucinations?
Absinthe is legal in most countries, including the United States and throughout Europe, with its production and sale regulated by food and beverage authorities. The myth that absinthe causes hallucinations is largely unfounded; its psychoactive reputation was exaggerated. Absinthe does contain thujone, a compound found in wormwood, but in very low quantities that are not enough to cause hallucinogenic effects. The high alcohol content is more likely to cause impairment.
How do you properly serve an Absinthe Drip?
To properly serve an Absinthe Drip, place a sugar cube on a slotted spoon or absinthe spoon over a glass containing a measure of absinthe. Slowly drip cold water over the sugar cube, allowing it to dissolve and mix with the absinthe. Continue to add water until the absinthe becomes cloudy and the volume is about three parts water to one part absinthe. This method not only dilutes the absinthe to a drinkable strength but also enhances its aromatics and flavor.
What does the term 'louche' mean in relation to absinthe?
The term 'louche' refers to the milky opalescence that occurs when water is added to absinthe. This effect is due to the essential oils from the botanicals, particularly anise, fennel, and wormwood, being soluble in alcohol but not in water. When water is added, these oils are dispersed into tiny droplets throughout the mixture, creating a cloudy appearance. The louche is considered a mark of quality absinthe, indicating a rich content of essential oils.
